No Surprise or “Surprise” or “SURPRISE”?

Team Spirit or Black Ops?

Contemplating whether to embark on the engagement ring journey together or to preserve the element of surprise is a delicate dance of communication and anticipation.

While shopping as a couple ensures a shared vision and avoids missteps, the allure of a clandestine proposal remains, well, alluring.

Think about which your partner would prefer, and you will know in your heart which to do. Plus, all reputable jewelry companies have pretty great return or resize or exchange programs for this very reason.

If it’s a surprise:

“Borrow” a ring from their jewelry box and trace it.

Enlist a friend to help get their ring size.

If they are a super duper deep sleeper, you can tie a string around their finger or use a ring sizer on them.

(That’s it. We think the rest of the hints on the internet will make it too obvious, like faking buying a ring for your mom? They’ll know.)

If it’s not a surprise and you don’t know your/their ring size:

Visit a professional jeweler (any jeweler) and have your ring finger measured for size.

Order a ring sizing gauge ($10) from Amazon.

Take a photo of a ring you own next to a ruler.

Trace your own ring.

Encircle the base of your finger with a string or paper, marking the point of connection. Measure the length with a ruler in millimeters, and divide it by 3.14 (Pi) to obtain the ring’s diameter. Consult an online ring size chart, selecting the closest measurement to determine your ring size with confidence.

To ensure a comfortable fit, the ring should strike a balance: snug enough to prevent slipping, yet allowing for easy passage over the knuckle. If your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger, measure both areas and choose a size that lies between the two. Capture your ring size at the end of the day when your fingers are warmed, as finger sizes fluctuate with the time of day and weather conditions. Additionally, consider that the fingers on your dominant hand tend to be slightly larger.
